COURSE BENEFITS & AIM:

This course delivers a 7 hours classroom and practical instruction and is aimed at operatives who may need to carry out a low risk confined space entry with adequate natural or mechanical ventilation.

Access into the space appears simple and unobstructed and there is no likely risk of flooding and the area remains safe under normal working conditions (ie. Meter pits, valve chambers). Gas monitoring may be required to ensure the atmospheric conditions prior to and during the work and/or entry remain acceptable. Assistance to enter and exit the space by the use of a tripod, winch and wearing of a harness may also be required.

On completion of the course delegates should be able to identify typical confined spaces, understand the risks that may be present or introduced and ensure that appropriate control measures are in place prior to entering a low risk Confined Space.

WHO WILL BENEFIT:

Managers, Supervisors, Engineers, Operatives, Plumbers, Electrician, Technician, Health & Safety Officers and staff who are required to enter and/or work in permanent Confined Spaces.

COURSE CONTENT:

Course Introduction. What is a confined space? The Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 (Definition, Specified risks, Duties, Competent people, Safe system of work).

Hazards & Risks of Confined Spaces Operations (Work related hazards, Isolations, Physical, Chemical, Biological, Psychological, Environmental, Atmospheric Hazards).

Confined Spaces Hazardous Atmospheres. What is Gas Monitors & Gas Monitoring (The Human Respiratory System, Hazardous Atmosphere, Oxygen Enriched/Deficient Atmosphere, Effects of Deficient Oxygen, Flammable Gases, Explosive Range, Sources of Ignition, Dusts, Toxic Gases, Gas Detections, Atmospheric Testing Equipment, using the monitors, pre-checking the monitors etc.). Work Tea competency, Training & Responsibilities.

Risk Assessment (What is Risk Assessment, how we do a Risk Assessment, Case scenarios to prepare Risk Assessment Method Statement and Safe Systems of Work). Medical Requirements (Bacterial and Viral Infection, Leptospirosis, Prevention of infection, Hygiene Regime). Risk Assessment for Confined Spaces Operations.

Safe System of Work, Roles & Duties of the Authorised Person & the Person in Charge. Permit to work Procedures. Confined Spaces Equipment, Personal protective equipment, team equipment, Respiratory Protective Equipment, Escape Breathing Apparatus. – First Aid and medical considerations – Practical Exercise: entry exercises with gas monitor, harness, tripod and winch.

ASSESSMENT/CERTIFICATION:

All delegates after being assessed and successful completing the course will be awarded a certificate with a note added to confirm that the course was approved by the Cyprus Human Resource Development Authority.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

It is a requirement that delegates attending this course should be physically and mentally fit. All delegates must bring with them a current medical certificate from their local doctor to prove they are able to enter into confined spaces, and a current inoculation certificate. (Further guidance provided in standard terms and conditions for courses).

Delegates will be continuously assessed by the trainer during the course. All equipment necessary for training on the course is provided by the delegates in some cases the hire of equipment may be necessary.

The content of this course includes awareness of periodic examinations of equipment. The course does not provide full training in the maintenance of equipment. Additional training relating to this subject may be of benefit to delegates (further information available upon request).
