SUMMARY:Managed Learning Program (MLP) for New Gas Operatives Requirements
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCOURSE AIM AND OBJECTIVES:\n\nThe MLP Program is designed f
or new entrants to the Gas Industry and individuals with relevant Mechanic
al\, engineering or construction qualifications and or relevant working ex
perience.\n\nTo undertake a learning program leading to the acquisition of
 :\n\n• Accredited Scheme Certification – ACS\n• A regulated qualific
ation awarded by BPEC Awards which has been recognized by the qualificatio
n regulators in the UK.\n• The issue of a BPEC Awards Training Completio
n certificate.\n\nThe M:P program of learning and development recognized b
y the Standards Setting Body (SSB) and IGEM which has been designed and de
veloped by various Certification Bodies.\n\nThe MLP includes sufficient th
eoretical learning input and supervised practical work training in a reali
stic work environment and supplemented by supervised workplace practice ga
ined under the supervision of a gas mentor.\n\nThe MLP program leading to
learner’s being able to install\, commission\, service and maintain a ra
nge of gas appliances\, installation and equipment including: -:\n\n• Do
mestic Installations and Appliances\n• LPG Gas Installations and Applian
 ces\n• Non-Domestic Heating Appliances\n• Non-Domestic Catering Applia
nces\n• Non-Domestic Installation Pipework and Meters\n\nEntry route for
new Gas Operatives:\n\nExperienced delegates wishing to join the ACS sche
me must:\n\n• Hold a valid certificate of gas componence.\n• A detaile
d initial interview to be carried out by an impartial member of staff\, fr
om the interview the interviewer will ascertain the knowledge and understa
nding of the Gas\ninstallations and regulations the prospective candidate
will have\,\n• A signed declaration from the learners Company and line m
anager that they have been working under supervision for at least 6 months
on LPG installations that have been constructed in\naccordance to the req
uirements of the regulations.\n\nNon-experienced Gas Engineers wishing to
join the ACS Scheme must:\n\n• Have at least 6 months experience working
under supervision in the sector they will be applying for with objective
evidence signed by their line Manager.\n• During the 6 months they must
have worked to the Gas safe systems of work procedures and the Safety in t
he installation and use of gas systems and appliances Regulations.\n• A
signed declaration from the learners Company and line Manager that they ha
ve been working under supervision for at least 6 months.\n• Delegates wi
shing to changeover to other sectors of the ACS scheme must follow the sam
e route as the one applicable to the UK.\n\nRequirements:\n\n• Training
on the relevant core subject – Mandatory for all applicants\n• Trainin

e certified too.\n• Optional for competent persons\n• Mandatory for no
n-experienced persons.\n• Assessment on both the core and practical for
all candidates\n• The route that the candidate will follow depends on th
eir knowledge\, experience and skills gained from their onsite guidance an
 d supervision.\n\nNon-experienced delegates:\n\nThe initial certificates i
ssued to the successful candidates will allow them to work under a fully c
ertified person for a further 6 months and become fully aware of the requi
rements of the Gas Safe and relevant regulations. Appropriate objective ev
idence / portfolio and signed by the delegates Gas Manager will be kept by
the candidate to review after the 6 months’ probation period has ended.
\n\nA review of the portfolio of their work after 6 months period which mu
st confirm that they have been working to the requirements of Gas Safe in
order for them to get a full valid certificate.\n\nThe evidence presented
by the learner\, will be assessed against the following:\n\n• Validity\n
 • Sufficiency\n• Accuracy\n• Appropriateness\n\n\n\n\nPortfolio and
onsite Evidence:\n\n• On-site work portfolios under the supervision of a
n ACS Gas Engineer will need to be kept with all the elements that will be
covered in the Candidates Requirements List as provided in\nthe MLP Folde
r / program.\n• In addition to the on-site work portfolio candidates wil
l be required to complete at least five boiler installations.\n• Once th
e on-site portfolio and boiler installations have been completed and signe
d off Delegates are ready to undertake the training and ACS gas assessment
for CCN1\, at a time arranged\nwith the Centre.\n• Training is provided
in-centre\, combined with theory and practical training. To be arranged w
 ith the centre.\n\nThe portfolios will cover:\n\na) Ventilation\nb) Pipe S
 izing\nc) Gas Rate\nd) Burner pressure\ne) Purging\nf) Flue Flow\ng) Spill
age\nh) Tightness Testing\n\n• All the above should be written in full d
etail from start to finish with the number allocated to each job.\n\n• W
hen writing up each workplace job\, the delegates should start with the de
tails of the job/task\, include what the job was\, from start to finish wi
th visual inspections at the meter\, at\nthe appliance\, what has been fou
nd and what is needed if they had any pipework\, all workings out need to
be recorded\, any co readings need to be included the job needs to be writ
ten up\nin full. Then the delegates need to include what their role was wi
thin the job. The tools\, materials and equipment that was used and how ma
ny hours was spent on the job. They need\nto include servicing\, breakdown
and installations of pipework flues and all appliances.\n\n• When writi
ng up their role or details of the task where tightness testing or gas rat
es are included this can be given a reference number so this will cut down
in repetition of work.\n\nPhotos must be provided of the delegates in the
picture on site carrying out various tasks:\n\n• Work carried out and e
ach job/worksheet must be signed and dated by the learner and signed by th
eir mentor with his gas safe / reference number.\n• From time to time th
e Centre’s appointed verifier will visit them on-site and sign off tasks
and ensure that they are on track with the training / assessment plans.\n
\nAdditional Information – what must be covered on site and class traini
ng:\n\n• Introduction to plumbing\, gas and heating theory and principle
s\n• Health and Safety including safe use of tools\, asbestos &amp\; leg
ionella awareness\, manual handling\, and fire safety precautions\n• Pip
ework installation and practical skills\n• Gas legislation\, Building Re
gulations and British Standards\n• Industry unsafe situations procedures
\n• Tightness testing of domestic LPG gas installations\n• Measuring a
nd interpretation of gas pressures and the calculation of heat inputs\n•
Gas appliance functions and the operation of gas safety controls\n• Pri
nciples of flueing\, chimneys and combustion\n• Safe isolation of electr
ical installations\n• Energy Efficiency for Domestic heating\n• Manage
d Learning Program (MLP) for Domestic LPG Gas\n• Water Regulations (WRAS
)\, Hot Water Systems &amp\; Safety (inc Unvented hot water systems)\n•
ACS training and assessment for Core Domestic Gas Safety (CCN1) and Gas fi
 red boilers under 70KW and CKR1 (Cookers)\n• Legionella Awareness\n• E
lectrical for Non-Electrical delegates\n\nOn completion of the planned tra
ining and the Managed learning program (MLP) course the successful student
s will receive a competence certificate for the different technical elemen
