COURSE AIM & OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the course delegates will be able to appreciate and understand their responsibilities and that of their subordinate staff. They will be able to recognise and control common risks associated with many different work-based activities which will include the manufacturing environment, the office environment construction activities and others and appreciate the standards of health and safety to be applied in key areas of these activities.

This Level 3 certificated course has been designed for Managers, Consultants, and persons in Supervisory and Managerial positions within their organisation who hold a responsibility for health and safety matters including the prevention of accidents and the avoidance of occupational ill health.

THE NEW AND IMPROVED NEBOSH CERTIFICATE:

The new NEBOSH International Certificate focuses on the role of a real-life health and safety professional. It looks at the real, everyday risks that people encounter and how to manage them to help protect people and profits.
You will develop the essential core risk management skills to create a safe and healthy workplace, and, you will have the foundation knowledge to identify common hazards and make recommendations to your employer to help them improve health and safety management.
The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (IGC) is one of the leading health and safety qualifications around the world. The IGC helps to develop your understanding of general workplace issues together with key international standards, and how they can be applied in various employment sectors around the world.
The course is divided into two units IG1 – Management of International Health and Safety and IG2 – Risk Assessment, which are assessed separately.

WHAT WILL BE COVERED?

IG1 is broken down into four elements made up of:

Element 1: Why we should manage workplace health and safety.

– The scope and nature of Occupational Health and Safety
– The Moral Social and Financial Reasons for promoting good Health and Safety standard
– The role of National Governments and International bodies in formulating a framework
for the regulation of Health and Safety

IG2 is a practical risk assessment exercise demonstrating an understanding of elements 5-11 including.

Element 6: Musculoskeletal health- Work related upper limb disorders
– Manual handling hazards and control measures
– Manually operated load handling equipment
– Powered load handling equipment

Element 7: Chemical and biological agents

– Forms of, and classification of, and health risks from hazardous substances
– Assessment of health risks
– Occupational Exposure Limits
– Control measures
– Specific Agents
– Safe handling and storage of waste

Element 8: General Workplace issues

– Health, Welfare and work environment
– Work at Height
– Confined Spaces
– Lone Working
– Slips, Trips and falls
– Safe movement of people and vehicles
– Work related driving

Element 9: Work equipment

– General requirements for work equipment
– Hazards and controls for handheld tools
– Mechanical and non-mechanical hazards of machinery
– Control measures for reducing risk from machinery hazards

Element 10: Fire

– Fire initiation, classification and spread
– Risk assessment
– Fire prevention and prevention of fire spread
– Fire alarm system and firefighting arrangements
– Evacuation of the workplace

Element 11: Electricity

– Principal hazards and risks associated with the use of electricity at work
– Control measures when working with electrical systems or using electrical
equipment in all workplace conditions

PRACTICAL RISK ASSESSMENT:

Please note that a Practical Risk Assessment will be required to be submitted a few days after the IG1 exam has been taken. This project will be evaluated together with the Open Book Examination to achieve the full Certificate. Guidance and preparation for this project will be given to all learners during their course.

ASSESSMENT/CERTIFICATION:

The NEBOSH INTERNATIONAL GENERAL CERTIFICATE IN OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH has been recognised for many years as the basis for a sound, broad introduction to the fundamentals of occupational health and safety. The syllabus and means of assessment were revised recently to take account of current developments in health and safety and in vocational assessment. Also, all learners will receive an attendance certificate from CMS Training Centre, as proof of attendance the 10-day Health and Safety Course.

IG1 – An online open book examination (OBE), examining the topics covered in Elements 1-4
IG2 – A 3-hour practical Risk Assessment carried out in the workplace, which will demonstrate the learner’s knowledge of workplace hazards and risks covered in Elements 5-11

Holders of NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for technical membership (Tech IOSH) of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and Associate membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management.

COURSE REGISTRATION AND STUDYING:

Delegates on the course need to be registered with NEBOSH early, so prompt registration on this course will need to be made 6 WEEKS BEFORE THE COURSE COMMENCES. A requisite of the course also requires delegates to commence studying well in advance of the course.

NEBOSH recommend that in addition to the notes and passed exam papers provided the following publication will be of use whilst completing the directed study.

PLEASE NOTE THE COURSE IS SUBSIDISED BY HRDA AT 70 HOURS, BUT THE COURSE IS RUN OVER 88 HOURS CLASSROOM TIME AND 40 HOURS PRIVATE STUDY THROUGH TUTOR GUIDANCE.
